How to Remove Scalp Buildup & Restore Your Hair's Healthy Shine

If you’re dealing with a case of scalp buildup, you’re likely dealing with the unpleasant symptom of an unhealthy scalp. Scalp buildup—which is essentially an accumulation of excess oils, product residue, dirt and debris, sweat, and even dead skin cells—can clog your pores, leaving your scalp dry, itchy, and/or flaky. Thankfully, eliminating scalp buildup is as simple as using the right products and taking a few extra steps in your hair routine. Here’s how to do it:

Step 1: Start With a Clarifying Shampoo

Using a clarifying shampoo is the first (and most important) step in getting rid of scalp buildup. Clarifying shampoos are specifically formulated to remove dirt, oils, product build up, and other impurities from your hair and scalp, leaving it fresh and clean. Be sure to use a gentle, sulfate-free clarifying shampoo for the best results and to avoid any stripping of the hair cuticles. Hint: Grow & Flow Deep-Cleansing Aloe Vera Shampoo.

Step 2: Double-Cleanse

Double-cleansing is key for eliminating stubborn buildup on your scalp. To double-cleanse, shampoo your hair twice—once to remove excess oils, and then again to ensure that product buildup is entirely gone. This will give your scalp the extra clean that it needs, and leave you with a healthy and happy head of hair.

Step 3: Condition Properly

Don’t forget to condition your scalp after you’ve given it a deep clean. Use a moisturizing conditioner, and focus it from the mid-lengths of your hair to the ends. Avoid getting too much conditioner on your scalp, as this can lead to a buildup of product over time.

Step 4: Massage Your Scalp

Giving your scalp a good massage will help to promote a healthy environment and alleviate any buildup in the future. Use your fingertips to massage your scalp—which will promote better circulation and improve the health of your scalp—for about five minutes, three to four times a week.

By following these steps, you can be sure that you’re doing everything you can to keep your scalp buildup to a minimum. With regular maintenance and care, you’ll be able to enjoy healthy and happy hair that is free from dandruff and product build-up.
